“Our mission is to reduce food insecurity, empower youth, support seniors, and build stronger families and communities by providing food assistance, fresh produce, housing guidance, education, job resources, and life-skills development.”

First Fruits Life Roots, Inc. was not born in a boardroom or through a large grant.
It was born from lived experience, faith, and a deep commitment to serving others with dignity.
Our founder, Mildred “Millie” Brown Taylor, has spent much of her life navigating hardship while still finding ways to give. Through seasons of illness, housing instability, caregiving, and personal loss, one truth remained constant: when people are nurtured with love, they grow.
Long before becoming an organization, First Fruits Life Roots existed as action. It began with sharing food, growing produce, helping neighbors, and volunteering alongside community partners such as Lunches of Love — first as a family receiving support, and later as a family giving back through service and donations.
As the need grew, so did the vision.
First Fruits Life Roots was created to go beyond temporary relief. Its purpose is to address the roots of struggle — food insecurity, isolation, lack of opportunity, and overlooked communities — while honoring the first fruits of hope, creativity, and resilience within every person.
On November 4, 2025, First Fruits Life Roots, Inc. was formally established as a Georgia-registered nonprofit organization, committed to serving DeKalb County and surrounding communities.
Today, our work focuses on:
Our history is still being written — not just by one person, but by every volunteer, partner, family, and neighbor who believes that love, when planted intentionally, can transform lives.
We sow love. We reap hope.

First Fruits Life Roots, Inc. is governed by a five-member Board of Directors that provides fiduciary oversight, strategic guidance, and accountability in accordance with the Georgia Nonprofit Corporation Code and nonprofit best practices.

It began with one simple idea: share what we have to help neighbors in need. Our founder, Mildred Taylor, first experienced the power of community while volunteering with Lunches of Love in Stone Mountain. Inspired, she started giving away produce from her family’s garden.

My son came home asking if he could accept a lunch from a lady at the park. I told him he could only do so after I met her myself. That lady was Cheryl Mitchell of Lunches of Love. Cheryl generously gave my children more lunches than we needed, and out of kindness, they began sharing them with other kids in the neighborhood who truly needed them. In June of 2016, on the fourth day that Lunches of Love had been out giving lunches, I planted a small garden and gave Cheryl the very first fruits it produced. From that seed, First Fruits was born — and today we proudly grow fresh food to support Lunches of Love, sowing love and feeding hope together.
As time passed, many of the children who once received lunches from Lunches of Love grew up and moved on from those communities. Yet they continued to reach out to me — asking for advice, guidance, and help with life skills, relationships, and resources. From those conversations, Life Roots was born. Today, the Life Roots branch of First Fruits provides support for young adults seeking direction, seniors who need help navigating services after leaving nursing homes, and neighbors experiencing homelessness who don’t know where to turn. Life Roots is about more than food — it’s about planting wisdom, offering guidance, and helping people grow strong foundations for life.

First Fruits Life Roots began with a simple act of service.
Over 13 years ago, our founder volunteered with Lunches of Love and soon after donated the very first fruits and vegetables from her own small garden directly to their director. That single act of giving planted the seed that would later grow into what First Fruits Life Roots is today.
Because of this history, many of our volunteer opportunities continue as group service efforts alongside Lunches of Love. We proudly honor their long-standing dedication to the community by working together at food distributions and outreach events. Volunteers often serve under the First Fruits Life Roots name, side by side with Lunches of Love, united by a shared mission to care for others.
At the same time, First Fruits Life Roots also relies on its own volunteers to support our growing work. Volunteer opportunities may include:
